Volkswagen . How to Use the Timing Light on a 22REA 22RE is the fuel injected version of Toyota's venerable 22R engine. The first 22RE was produced in 1982. Different forms of the engine were available through 1995. Although specifications vary with year and model, the basic ignition timing procedure is the same. Specifications are located on the Vehicle Emission Control Information label in the engine compartment. The use of a timing light with either a jumper lead or an inductive-type pickup is recommended. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Metric socket wrench set Rags White paint Tachometer Vacuum hose plugs or golf tees (needed on some models) Jumper wire (needed on some models) Step by Step : 1 Locate the timing plate on the front of the engine, just above the crankshaft pulley. Clean the plate with a rag if necessary so you can clearly see the marks. 2 Turn the crankshaft pulley with a socket wrench until the timing notch in the pulley is visible. Clean the notch and mark it with a dot of white paint. 3 Bring the engine up to operating temperature. Attach a tachometer according to the meter instructions and adjust the idle to the correct rpm. Turn the engine off. 4 Consult the VECI label in the engine compartment for timing procedures. Remove and plug the necessary vacuum hoses if required. Attach a jumper wire between terminals TE1 and E1 on the check plug if necessary. Make note of the timing mark specification, normally 5 degrees BTDC. 5 Connect the timing light power cables to the battery and the pickup cable to the number one cylinder spark plug wire. Check the engine compartment to make sure all the cables, wires and loose hoses are out of the way of the engine fan. 6 Start the engine. Press the accelerator three or four times, then allow the engine to idle for a minute. Point the timing light at the crankshaft pulley to illuminate the timing marks. The white dot on the pulley should align with the proper mark on the timing plate. 7 Adjust the timing if necessary by loosening the distributor hold down clamp and turning the distributor body until the marks align. Tighten the clamp. Check the engine rpm and adjust. Remove the test equipment and reconnect all hoses and wires. Test-drive the vehicle.

The ignition timing on all models is adjusted in the same way. The ignition timing of an internal combustion engine controls when a spark will occur to start the engine. You should routinely adjust the ignition timing to its correct setting as part of your Mustang's routine maintenance. You will need a few tools and some mechanical skills. Be careful to not damage or misplace any parts of the engine when adjusting the ignition timing. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Timing light Wrench Jumper cables Wheel chocks Step by Step : 1 Park your Mustang in an area with enough space to work on the engine safely. Turn off all accessories and equipment, including the radio and air conditioning/heat. 2 Place wheel chocks under the wheels of your car. Put the transmission in neutral, engage the emergency brake, and bring the engine to an idle speed of 750 rpm. 3 Open the hood. Disconnect the single wire spout connector at the ignition module. 4 Connect a timing light to the battery by placing the red clip on the positive terminal first, then the black clip on the negative terminal second. 5 Place the timing light clamps on the number 1 spark plug wire connected to the cylinder head. Shine the timing light on the pulley connected to the main crankshaft. 6 Observe where the timing mark on the pulley falls compared to the degree tab on the front of the engine. You can advance the timing a little beyond the recommended 10 degrees, but do not deviate too far away from 10 degrees. 7 Use your wrench to loosen the distributor lock-down bolt at the base of the distributor housing. Disconnect the distributor vacuum hose and plug it into the electronic spark computer. Ground the carburetor switch with jumper cables. 8 Rotate the distributor with your hand until the timing mark on the pulley reaches your desired ignition time. 9 Unplug the distributor vacuum hose from the electronic spark computer and connect it back into the distributor housing. Tighten the lock-down bolt with your wrench. Remove the jumper cables from the carburetor switch. Remove the timing light from the engine components. Connect the single wire spout connector back into the ignition control module. Step by Step : 10 Remove the wheel chocks from the wheels of your Mustang.
